When Jesus said in Mark 1:17, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (BSB), he could’ve just as easily been talking to the Suba people—a group of outstanding fishermen and boat builders, much like the disciples themselves.
Many of the Suba people live on the islands of Rusinga and Mfangano in Lake Victoria. Before hippo hunting was made illegal, the Suba were renowned hunters of these creatures, considered the most dangerous animals in the world. Today, fish remains a key part of the Suba diet, but farming and cattle herding have become staples to their way of life as well.
